Plot: A young man from a poor family, Egor Dmitrievich Glumov, motivated by ambition, wants to make a career. He deftly flatters, hypocrites, and obsequies, skillfully exploiting the weaknesses of his patrons, and secretly ridicules their stupidity and vulgarity in his diary.
