From 2017 to 2019, Gauland was one of two federal spokespersons (party chairmen) of the AfD. He has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2017; from 2017 to 2021, he served as one of the two chairpersons of his party's parliamentary group, alongside Alice Weidel.
