Born in Campina Grande, Paraíba, he moved to Recife, Pernambuco, at a very young age. In the 1970s and 1980s, he led the "anarchist" wing of the Recife Super-8 Cycle, which affronted the military dictatorship with experimental films. He later worked in television and coined the expression "Árido Movie", a synthesis of the resurgent feature film production in the Northeast in the late 1990s. He worked as a screenwriter for some films of the new Pernambucan cinema.
